Deuteronomy 18:10–12 — Yahweh’s Warning Against Forbidden Spiritualism

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 — KJV

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

The Main Thought

In Deuteronomy 18:10–12, Yahweh gives Israel a strong warning: His people were not to imitate the spiritual practices of the surrounding nations.

These practices were not harmless curiosity. They involved false worship, forbidden spiritual inquiry, manipulation, deception, fear, and rebellion against seeking Yahweh’s counsel.

The nations sought hidden knowledge through omens, spells, spirits, sacrifices, and the dead. Yahweh’s people were to seek Him alone.

“There Shall Not Be Found Among You…”

This opening phrase is serious. Yahweh was not merely advising Israel to avoid questionable customs. He was commanding that such practices must not exist among His covenant people.

Israel was being separated from the nations around them. They were not to copy the spiritual corruption of Canaan, Egypt, Babylon, or any other pagan system. Yahweh’s people were to be holy because He is holy.

Passing Sons or Daughters Through the Fire

“Maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire…”

This refers to child sacrifice or fire-ritual devotion, often associated with the worship of false gods such as Molech.

Leviticus 18:21 — KJV

“And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.”

This was one of the most dreadful forms of pagan worship. It showed how far false religion could corrupt the natural affection of a parent and turn devotion into cruelty.

Yahweh utterly rejected such worship.

Divination

“Or that useth divination…”

Divination is the attempt to gain hidden knowledge or predict the future through forbidden spiritual means.

This includes seeking answers apart from Yahweh by omens, signs, rituals, or occult methods. Instead of trusting God’s word and righteous guidance, divination tries to seize secret knowledge through unauthorized spiritual channels.

Yahweh’s people were not to be guided by superstition or fear. They were to be guided by His law, His prophets, and His revealed word.

Observer of Times

“Or an observer of times…”

This describes someone who interprets times, seasons, omens, or signs in order to predict events or make decisions.

This may include astrology-like practices, lucky or unlucky days, and reading patterns in the heavens or earthly events as though they carried hidden spiritual messages apart from Yahweh.

The heavens declare the glory of God, but they are not to become objects of superstition or instruments of forbidden guidance.

Enchanter, Witch, and Charmer

“Or an enchanter, or a witch…”

“Or a charmer…”

These terms describe those who use spells, incantations, magical formulas, charms, or sorcery.

This is not prayer. This is not faith. This is the attempt to bend unseen powers, people, circumstances, or spirits by occult means.

Such practices are rooted in control, not trust; manipulation, not obedience; darkness, not light.

Yahweh’s servants do not use spells. They call upon Him.

Consulting Familiar Spirits

“Or a consulter with familiar spirits…”

This refers to seeking communication through spirits. The word “familiar” gives the sense of a spirit associated with, attached to, or working through a person.

This is spiritual danger. It invites deception by unseen powers and turns the heart away from Yahweh.

The law did not allow Israel to seek counsel from spirit-mediums. Yahweh’s people were to seek Him.

Wizard and Necromancer

“Or a wizard, or a necromancer.”

A wizard, in this context, is one who claims secret supernatural knowledge through occult means.

A necromancer is one who seeks the dead for knowledge.

This directly connects with the sin of Saul when he sought the woman at Endor.

1 Samuel 28:7 — KJV

“Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit…”

Saul had already departed from faithful obedience. When Yahweh would not answer him, Saul sought forbidden counsel. This marked a deep spiritual collapse.

He turned from Yahweh’s appointed way and sought knowledge through the forbidden door.

Why Yahweh Condemns These Things

Deuteronomy 18:12 — KJV

“For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD…”

These practices are called abominations because they replace trust in Yahweh with forbidden powers and lying spiritual sources.

They also open the heart to deception.

They promise knowledge, but lead into darkness.
They promise power, but bring bondage.
They promise guidance, but turn the soul away from the living God.

The Nations Were Judged for These Abominations

“…and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”

This shows that Yahweh’s judgment against the Canaanite nations was not arbitrary. Their land had become defiled by abominable practices, including idolatry, child sacrifice, sorcery, and spiritism.

Israel was warned not to inherit the land and then imitate the very sins for which the nations were judged.

That warning remains sobering. To receive light from God and then return to darkness is a grievous thing.

The Proper Source of Divine Counsel

The beauty of the passage is that Yahweh does not merely forbid false spiritual guidance. He also provides the true source of divine instruction.

Just a few verses later, He says:

Deuteronomy 18:15 — KJV

“The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.”

This prophecy ultimately points to Christ Jesus, the true and faithful spokesman of Yahweh.

The contrast is clear:

Do not seek spirits.
Do not seek omens.
Do not seek spells.
Do not seek the dead.
Hearken to the Prophet Yahweh raises up.

Christ: The True Light and Faithful Prophet

Christ did not speak from himself as an independent source. He spoke the words of the Father who sent him.

John 12:49 — KJV

“For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

Yahweh’s people are not left to wander after hidden powers or forbidden mysteries. God has spoken through His appointed servants, and most fully through His beloved Son.

In Christ, we do not need occult signs, spirit-mediums, charms, astrology, or the dead.

We have the true Prophet.
We have the true Light.
We have the living Word of Yahweh.

Clean Summary

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 teaches that Yahweh forbids His people from occultism, divination, sorcery, spirit-mediums, necromancy, pagan sacrifice, and all forbidden spiritual practices.

His servants are not to seek hidden knowledge through spirits, omens, spells, astrology, or the dead.

Instead, Yahweh’s people must seek His word, His righteous counsel, and the Prophet He has raised up: Christ Jesus.

The darkness offers secret knowledge.
Yahweh gives true light.

The nations sought spirits.
Yahweh says, “Hearken unto him.”

Closing Thought

The warning of Deuteronomy 18 is not merely ancient history. It is a living admonition.

Every age has its own forms of forbidden spiritualism. Some appear religious. Some appear mystical. Some appear scientific. Some appear harmless. But the root question remains the same:

Will man seek hidden knowledge apart from Yahweh, or will he hear the word of God through the One whom Yahweh has appointed?

For the faithful, the answer is clear:

We do not seek the dead.
We do not consult familiar spirits.
We do not practice darkness.
We listen to Yahweh’s chosen Prophet, Christ Jesus, and walk in the light of God’s holy word.
