THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AS HIDDEN TREASURE

Growing in Wisdom and the New Creation

The Scriptures present the knowledge of God as one of the greatest treasures a person can seek. Gold perishes, silver fades, and earthly possessions pass away, but the knowledge of God and of His Christ leads to life, wisdom, and transformation.

Seeking Wisdom as Hidden Treasure

“If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”
— Proverbs 2:4–5 (KJV)

Notice the progression:

Receive His words.
Incline the ear unto wisdom.
Apply the heart to understanding.
Cry after knowledge.
Seek as silver.
Search as hidden treasure.

Then comes the promise:

“Thou... shalt find the knowledge of God.”

The knowledge of God is not discovered by casual interest. It is sought with the eagerness of one searching for buried treasure.

The Word of God Gives Light

The great Psalm of the Word, Psalm 119, repeatedly connects God's Word with wisdom and understanding.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
— Psalm 119:11

The hidden Word becomes a safeguard and guide.

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
— Psalm 119:18

Every student of Scripture should pray this prayer. The Scriptures contain treasures that require opened eyes and humble hearts.

“Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.”
— Psalm 119:33

“Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law.”
— Psalm 119:34

The desire for understanding and the desire for obedience belong together.

The psalmist continues:

“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.”
— Psalm 119:97

“Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies.”
— Psalm 119:98

“Through thy precepts I get understanding.”
— Psalm 119:104

Then come two of the most beautiful statements in all of Scripture:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
— Psalm 119:105

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
— Psalm 119:130

God's Word illuminates the path, gives discernment, and imparts understanding.

The Knowledge of God and Eternal Life

The New Testament carries this same theme forward.

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
— John 17:3

Eternal life is inseparably connected with knowing the Father and His Anointed Son.

The Prayer for Spiritual Understanding

Paul prayed:

“That ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
— Colossians 1:9

And why?

“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
— Colossians 1:10

The order is beautiful:

Knowledge of His will

Wisdom and understanding

A worthy walk

Fruitfulness

Increasing in the knowledge of God.

Knowledge is not merely information. It transforms conduct and deepens fellowship with God.

The New Creation Is Renewed in Knowledge

“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.”
— Colossians 3:10

The New Creation is a continual work of renewal and growth.

Peter likewise exhorts believers:

“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.”
— 2 Peter 1:5

Knowledge is to be added to faith, and that knowledge is to produce self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.

A Treasure Worth Seeking

The Scriptures invite every believer to become a seeker of divine wisdom.

Seek as silver.

Search as hidden treasure.

Pray for opened eyes.

Hide the Word in the heart.

Walk in its light.

Increase in the knowledge of God.

The knowledge of God and of His Christ is among the greatest treasures that can be possessed, for it renews the mind, transforms the life, and prepares the sons and daughters of God for everlasting fellowship with Him.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments.”
— Psalm 111:10

May every heart continue to seek wisdom as hidden treasure and grow continually in the knowledge of the Most High God and of His beloved Son.

HaliluYah!
